ABOUT THE DIOCESE OF KWARA

Following the flourishing work of God in the then Offa/Ilorin Archdeaconry and the Lokoja Archdeaconry, a proposal was presented for the creation of a second Diocese in Northern Nigeria at the Provincial Synod of the Church of the Province of West Africa in 1967. However, circumstances that surrounded its creation caused an 11-year waiting period, the longest exercise in the process of creating a diocese in the Anglican Communion (at that time).

Sequel to the division of Offa/Ilorin Archdeaconry into two individual Archdeaconries in 1974, consent was finally given for the creation of the proposed North Central Diocese, and renamed (following the creation of Kwara State) Diocese of Kwara: one of the largest dioceses in Nigeria. The Late Rt. Rev. Herbert Haruna was consecrated and enthroned as the pioneering bishop. Click here for more
